i am going to a wedding this saturday (dec. 6). it is an evening wedding. i just bought a long sleeve black dress-a nice heavy polyester fabric that i thought would be great for the cold weather. it has a little bit of a deep cut neck line and then it bunches right under the bust and flows down nicely. it's just below the knee length. the shoes i got are closed pointy, slightly square toe, with a very small heal and straps in the back. it's that black and white pattern that i've seen called plaid but i call it pinwheel. accessories will be a simple black bag with bow on it and my fendi pearls (off white-ish) which is long but i will double it. no bracelets/earrings. i have short hair which will i will just flat iron straight.
so what do you think...is this "formal" enough? the invite didn't specify but i know it's not casual, and since they didn't specify black tie i would assume it would just be formal? better to be over dressed than under. is long sleeves ok???
thanks

Black and white is not appropriate at a wedding, ever. Sorry, it is a very informal, kinda summer pattern. If you have some satin wide leg pants, high heels and a really pretty long sleeve top, that would be better. Winter wedding present special challenges. Nobody wants to be cold or wear a thin dress to shiver in. However, think about the bride and her attendants. They will be freezing. Try to find a dress that is pretty, and a neutral color like silver, gray, muted pink... something like that, and wear tights and a nice winter coat.
